Costco Playhouse Hack: How to Transform an Outdoor Cedar Playhouse with Paint!

Costco playhouse painted white and pink

Today I’m sharing one of the cutest projects I have ever done. The Costco playhouse hack! Since the first time I saw it on Instagram I knew I wanted to do one for Sophia, and now Olivia too.

White and pink playhouse

This is not anything new, there are tons of great examples all over Pinterest. So I’m only going to go over the colors I used and what order to paint, and some tips that I wish I had when building my own.

I hope it will help and inspire you to take on this cute project for your kiddos!

There are many cute little houses out there,I picked this house from Costco, mostly because of the size.

I wanted to be big enough for two kids or more to play, but you can go big or small.

Also, I read somewhere that the plastic playhouses are more challenging to paint since you will probably need to sand it first. I have linked some cute ones below:

How to paint a cedar outdoor playhouse

You can built the house first and then paint or you can paint all the parts and then build. I decided to built first, and paint later. However, I wish I had at least painted the ceiling before assembling.

Outdoor playhouse

It might have been easier to do with the parts laying out, instead I got my hair full of paint 😂 as I tried to paint the inside ceiling.

Also, keep in mind, that I’m only 5.2, so I fit perfectly inside the house. But if you are a tad taller definitely paint before adding the ceiling.

I used Behr Marquee semi gloss in Crystal Cut  for the house. And Pink Quartz by Behr for the door and the window nook.

Just make sure to ask for outdoor paint, especially if you are placing the playhouse outdoors like mine.

I sprayed the doorbell, mailbox and door hinges with favorite gold spray paint and all the red parts were sprayed white.

Assembling your playhouse

Layout all the parts in order per instructions. This step is really helpful! There is also a app to help you built.

I really didn’t use it. The instructions were pretty clear and I kind of enjoyed building the house. Then, follow the steps below together with the instructions:

Costco cedar playhouse.

1. Locate all accessories and door hinges, spray it gold/white or the color of your choice. Let it dry fully (its best to let it dry overnight).

2. Build the base and paint it (before adding the roof). I did 2 coats of primer and one of the white paint. I’m not sure I really needed the primer, but since I had leftovers I decided to use. You can probably just use the regular paint.

3. Paint the ceiling parts and door before assembling. This is going to make your life much easier!

4. Finish assembling the house and add your accessories. I added the door number to match ours and she loved it!

I will take more pictures once we add our fence. I was trying not to get my neighbors houses in the pictures! Hope you guys enjoyed!

We have the same playhouse and I’m trying to figure out how I could enclose windows so it will stay cleaner. Did you do anything with your windows?

I used paving stones to set it on and a outdoor rug, but lifted it slightly with metal brackets from lowes. The brackets are made for outdoor post and lifts it about a 1/2 inch so air can circulate underneath to prevent rot.

This is adorable! How many gallons of the Crystal Cut did you need? This is my inspiration for my daughter’s second birthday present! I just ordered a wooden playhouse and can’t wait to get started πŸ™‚

Only one!!! Actually not even that… but I used leftovers primer that I had it. I think one gallon would be enough depending on size of the house! 😘😘

For the roof I only did one coat!! I actually liked the way it looked so I left it like that. The rest of the house got 3 coats!

How adorable! Everything is better pink! I love how prettily dressed your daughter is in the photos with her little baby hair all fixed up. I enjoyed dressing up my little babydoll when she was little too. She’s 21 now and still the love of my life. Enjoy!

I noticed you said you built the playhouse first. How bad was it to paint after it was built? I have this playhouse but it’s old and now I want to paint it but a little nervous since it’s already built.thanks!

I think the only parts you might have to be more careful with are the plastic ones (I sprays those before assembling). The rest it was better to paint after! Much easier πŸ˜˜πŸ’“ go for it!

I just purchased this house and then the paint supplies from Home Depot. My daughter is turning 6 in October and she is going to love this. We had a playhouse someone built from scratch but it was a bit small and didn’t really withstand Michigan weather. Can’t wait to do this project and give it to her for her birthday! Yours looks beautiful!
